How to File KRA Nil Returns on eCitizen (2025 Guide)
Are you currently unemployed, a student, or not earning any income? If you have an active KRA PIN, you are still required by law to file your KRA tax returns every year. Failure to do so before 30th June will result in a KSh 2,000 penalty.
Who Should File Nil Returns?
You must file a Nil Return if:
- You were unemployed during the last tax year
- You did not earn any income
- You are a student or job seeker with a KRA PIN
Step-by-Step Guide to File Nil Returns via eCitizen
Step 1: Go to the eCitizen Website
Visit https://www.ecitizen.go.ke
Step 2: Log In
Use your ID number and password (or linked email/phone number) to log in.
Step 3: Click on Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
After login, scroll down and select the KRA option.
Step 4: Click on "Personal Account"
You will be redirected to the KRA dashboard.
Step 5: On the KRA Page, Click "File Returns"
You’ll find this option at the top menu.
Step 6: Enter the Required Details
- Select return type: Income Tax - Resident Individual
- Enter return period: 01/01/2024 to 31/12/2024
- Select: Nil Return
Step 7: Submit
Click Submit. You’ll get a confirmation message. You can download the return receipt for your records.
