Yeast Infection in men {Can men get yeast Infections?}

Yeast infections are quite common in women across different parts of the world; however, can men get yeast infections? For us to understand this we first need to get to the basics of how yeast infections arise.

                          Pathological cause yeast infection?

Yeast infections are caused by a fungus known as Candida Albicans.
This fungus thrives well in warm and humid environments. It is usually found in various parts of the human body as is usually part of the normal flora which complements the various functions of the immune system.
Among the body parts or organs in which this fungus that causes yeast infection is found include parts along the GIT eg the mouth, throat, etc; the vagina in women. This fungus normally doesn't cause any infection when it exists in balanced populations in the human body.

                  How Candida albicans causes yeast infection.

When populations of this fungus are disrupted or disrupted it now becomes pathogenic and now causes yeast infections. For example ;
The human vagina is comprised of many different microorganisms including other strains of fungi and bacteria. These microorganisms usually have different competitive abilities that enable them to survive. Some like Lactobacillus usually metabolize lactogen in the vagina and produce lactic acid in return. Since lactic acid is acidic it definitely kills all microorganisms that can't survive in any acidic conditions. Other microorganisms in the vagina under the normal flora also do the same thing by secreting different compounds that in the end ensure no pathogens can survive in the vagina.
When at any given point any of the other microorganism populations are reduced drastically the Candida albicans fungus is usually quite swift and able to multiply fast and fill the vacuum left. Once this fungus has been able to fill in the vacuum left it now able to destroy the vaginal mucosa easily which leads to yeast infection.

                                 What causes yeast infection

  • Broad-spectrum antibiotics:-
Broad-spectrum antibiotics include:
  • Aminoglycosides (except for streptomycin)
  • Ampicillin
  • Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (Augmentin)[12]
  • Carbapenems (e.g. imipenem)
  • Piperacillin/tazobactam
  • Quinolones (e.g. ciprofloxacin)
  • Tetracyclines
  • Chloramphenicol
  • Ticarcillin
  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)

Broad-spectrum antibiotics usually target and kill the intended bacteria and also the bacteria classified as normal flora . They are usually indiscriminate. The result of this is a situation in which Candida Albicans can be able to take advantage and multiply fast leading to an overgrowth of the fungus and thus a yeast infection.

  • Irresponsible sex behavior:-
Most microbes usually consist of different strains of themselves eg .E.coli usually have more than 5 different types(strains) of itself. The type of C.ablicans found in the mouth may be slightly different from what's found in the anus and vagina. By engaging in behaviors like oral sex, anal sex then later normal sex you risk a scenario in which a different strain of the fungus may be transferred from this body parts into the vagina. It may happen that the transferred strain is more virulent and thus you end up with recurrent or resistant yeast infection.
As well you may not only be able to transfer the bacteria to your vagina but you may also be able to transfer other types of microorganisms into the vagina that may aid the quick and faster multiplication and growth of the fungus in the vagina.

So can you get a vaginal yeast infection from Oral sex? Can you get a vaginal yeast infection from anal sex? The answer to that is yes. The risk somehow increases.
Can having multiple partners lead to vaginal yeast infection? Yes, it increases chances since they may transfer different types of the fungus from different persons they had intercourse with.

                  Can men get yeast infection?

Yes, Men can get yeast infection.C.albicans usually needs warm and humid conditions to thrive well. If a man has sex with a woman/person who has a yeast infection he can also get a yeast infection.
This is because the fungal populations in the woman/person would be very high at that specific period.

                  Symptoms of yeast infection in men

  Here are the symptoms of yeast infections in men. The symptoms usually vary greatly from women . First symptoms will appear hours after having sex with an infected person.
  • Burning sensation along the urethra. This is usually among the earliest symptoms that you will experience immediately after having sex with a person infected with a yeast infection.
  • Itchiness on the penis and around the scrotum.
  • Redness and swelling along the penis head.
  • Pain during urination.
  • Formation of small bumps (papules) that may contain puss.
