Whats Ebola hemorrhagic fever?
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a viral disease caused by the Ebola virus. This virus which is a filovirus falls under the filoviridae class of viruses that infects primates and humans. It is among the few viruses that have been able to cross the animal-human barrier (jump across different animal species ). Other viruses similar to it include cuevavirus and marbugvirus .
Ebola virus has six subspecies ie
- Zaire ebolavirus
- Sudan ebolavirus
- Tai forest ebolavirus
- Cote d Ivoire ebolavirus
- Bundibugyo ebolavirus
- Bombali ebolavirus
The first cases of Ebola were discovered in Yambuku village in the Democratic republic of Congo in 1976 and in Nzara in south Sudan around the same period .The largest epidemic was in west Africa around 2016 with 28,646 cases and a mortality of almost half the reported cases .At the moment there is a current Ebola outbreak in parts of the DRC which is proving difficult to control.
